Buying a property: reasons, drawbacks and decision criteria

Owning your own home can fit a long-term plan, but it is not the better solution in every situation in life. What matters is whether the advantages and the obligations match your goals and your financial means. So do not weigh up the wish to own against your current rent and leave it at that.

Buying a property: reasons, drawbacks and decision criteria

Spell out the possible advantages

A home of your own can offer a long-term perspective on how you use it, along with the scope to shape it to your taste. Which alterations are actually permitted, however, depends on the property and on the rules that apply to it. Set out which freedoms matter to you personally.

Take the costs and the commitment seriously

A purchase ties up your own capital and brings ongoing obligations. Financing, maintenance and any larger works that may arise must be affordable. A later rise in value is not a reliable basis for funding what you spend today.

Take your life plans into account

A possible move to another area, changes within the household or the wish for more accessible living can all change what you need. Check whether the property would still suit you if plausible changes of that kind came about.

Compare buying and the alternatives on equal terms

Set several scenarios side by side: buying, continuing to rent, or deciding afresh at a later date. Work with specific offers and a complete budget. A well-considered decision does not have to lead everyone to the same answer.
